My name is Carin Meyer. I am a lifelong Alaskan, born in Anchorage and raised partly on the Clearwater River near Delta Junction, where my family homesteaded in the 1940s. I studied history at the University of Alaska Anchorage, graduating in 2003, and wrote poetry seriously enough to apply for an MFA before building a career in communications instead. I worked in public relations for more than a decade, as an information officer, science writer, and communications manager. I later co-founded a water well drilling company in the Mat-Su Valley.
In 2017, I began writing for bp Magazine and bphope.com about living with bipolar disorder. I became a paid columnist in 2020, and my essays have garnered more than a million online views. My work has also appeared in The Mighty, Psych Central, and Recovery Diaries.
I live near Palmer, Alaska. My husband and two sons are Inupiaq, and together we harvest wild salmon and moose to feed our families. Every summer, I can still be found running my own riverboat up the Clearwater River in search of the river’s biggest grayling.
